Kaspersky Video Banner

This was a cool project to work on because the Flash content had to be optimized and developed so that it could be used interchangeably between the various countries in which Kaspersky operates.

Go ahead, take a gander.

Live: CabinetsQuick! (Phase I)

CabinetsQuick! Screenshot

The first phase of the CabinetsQuick! Custom Cabinet Builder has been put online and is ready for stress testing. The next phase will boost it with even more functionality, including project retrieval and significantly improved user management.

The greatest part of the application is something that happens entirely on the back end and is (unfortunately) never seen by the end user. But to give you an idea of what takes place: an .ini type file is generated and then sent to a 3D application that then renders the cabinets and draws up cutting specs. Pretty sweet!

How can I view a FLV file? Copy, Paste, Play with this Simple FLV Viewer.

Did a client just deliver some FLVs but you have no way of viewing them? It happens.

In fact, it just recently happened to a buddy a mine. He sent me an email essentially asking "How can I view an FLV file?" The quick answer is: you need to create a Flash file that uses the FLVPlayback component and that component should point to the FLV that you want to load.

After a quick googling, I found several articles that explained ways to build a viewer and a few open source options that required a download. But, I was unable to find a simple solution where you could just point to the FLV (on a web server) and view it. The solution: build one.

The result: I whipped up a very simple FLV Viewer that allows you to paste a URL to a FLV file, click "Load and Play," and watch.

So go ahead and check out the simple FLV Viewer. Hopefully this helps someone out!

Quick note, if you're having issues running FLVs from your server, be sure that you've set the MIME type on the server accordingly. You can read about configuring your server for FLVs from Adobe.

Aflac Racing Media Room

Aflac Racing's new video player uses Flash and XML to dynamically load and display video and photos. The entire piece is customized via the external XML file.

This was a really fun project to work on! If you have any questions on how it works, just post them in the comments!

ActionScript3 Spellbook

Flash No Comments »

ActionScript 3 Spellbook CoverLately, I've been spending a considerable amount of time working on my AS3 coding. For those of you that may not know it, ActionScript3 is quite a departure from ActionScript 2.

My current schedule is to spend 2 hours a day working through AS3 content and concepts. The only problem is that when my coding time is coupled with trying to learn guitar and Spanish, my import statements get cross wired and end up looking like import el.flasho.chords.DFamily

Naturally, as I go about learning ActionScript3 I end up writing countless lines of code and after awhile they all start to blend together. To help reinforce concepts and code, I'm following a fantastic idea that I read about from Dave Seah, the development of a code "Spellbook".

Dave's Spellbook uses a wiki to organize the knowledge he gains about SQL in his quest to master the language. While this is a fantastic idea, I'm planning on keeping my book in strictly paper form. Hopefully, by handwriting each line the concepts, syntax and class paths will become easier to remember.

ActionScript 3 Spellbook: Conjure - Fluid Flash LayoutIt would probably be more appropriate to call my version a cookbook of sorts, because it's mainly going to be a collection of script recipes. My current goal is to have a blog post and sample code download to go with each entry that I make into the spellbook.
